Restoring a 1970 Camaro: From Barn Find to Show Car
When this 1970 Camaro rolled into our shop, it had been sitting in a barn for over 20 years. The original Hugger Orange paint was faded and peeling, the floors had rust-through, and the 350 V8 hadn’t turned over in decades. But underneath the neglect, we saw the bones of a true classic muscle car.
Initial Assessment
The first step in any restoration is a thorough evaluation. We put the Camaro on the lift and documented every issue:
- Body condition: Severe rust in floor pans, quarter panels showing surface rust, minor damage to rear bumper
- Mechanical state: Engine seized, transmission unmoved for years, brake system completely deteriorated
- Interior damage: Upholstery torn and sun-damaged, dashboard cracked, headliner sagging
- Missing components: Original carburetor replaced with aftermarket, radio missing, trim pieces lost to time
Despite the extensive work needed, the VIN confirmed this was a numbers-matching RS/SS model—a rare find worth preserving correctly.
Bodywork & Paint Restoration
We started by stripping the car down to bare metal. The body went through a complete media blasting process to remove all paint and surface rust. This revealed the true extent of the rust damage—both floor pans needed replacement, along with sections of the trunk pan.
Panel replacement process:
- Welded in AMD replacement floor pans
- Cut and replaced lower quarter panel sections
- Metal-finished all welds to factory contour
- Applied rust converter to remaining surface rust
After metalwork, we moved to paint preparation—the most critical phase. Block sanding took over 40 hours to achieve show-quality straightness. We used a high-build epoxy primer followed by urethane primer-surfacer.
The owner wanted to keep the original Hugger Orange (GM paint code 72), so we mixed modern base coat to match the factory formula. Seven coats of base coat and four coats of clear created the deep, wet look you expect from a show car.
Engine Rebuild
The matching-numbers 350 V8 was the heart of this restoration. After teardown, we sent the block to our machine shop for:
- Cylinder boring and honing: Went .030 over to remove taper and scoring
- Deck surfacing: Ensured perfect head gasket sealing
- Crankshaft balancing: Eliminated all vibration
- Valve job: Restored compression and performance
We rebuilt with a mix of OEM-spec parts and subtle upgrades:
- Forged pistons for durability
- Performance camshaft (mild street profile)
- Double-roller timing chain
- Edelbrock Performer intake manifold
- Correct Rochester Quadrajet carburetor (date-coded appropriate)
After assembly, we broke in the engine carefully—30 minutes at varying RPM, multiple oil changes, and compression testing to verify ring seal. Final dyno results: 315 horsepower at the flywheel, well within period-correct specs.
Interior Restoration
The interior received a complete transformation while maintaining factory correctness:
- Seats: Re-upholstered in correct houndstooth pattern
- Dashboard: Restored original pad, replaced all gauge bezels
- Carpet: Replaced with correct loop-style in black
- Door panels: Restored original panels, replaced window felts
- Headliner: Installed new perforated vinyl in black
Every detail mattered—we sourced correct seat belt buckles, original-style dome light, and period-correct AM/FM radio.
Final Assembly & Results
After nine months of dedicated work, this Camaro transformed from a neglected barn find to a concours-quality show car. The final assembly included:
- Complete brake system rebuild with power disc conversion
- Suspension refresh with polyurethane bushings
- Correct Rally wheels with BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires
- All chrome re-plated to show quality
- Every nut and bolt either restored or replaced
The owner debuted the car at a local show and took home Best in Class. More importantly, this Camaro is now preserved for future generations of enthusiasts.
